X Theory has a strong hold on the scene in the lansing area
as it has a skill of picking the best of the up and coming artists of the area.
The organization does not stick to a certain type of music like most out there;
they stick to their word “collaboration”. Arriving at 10:30 I knew I was half
way through Dj FireAnt and Dj Fahzee’s set so I quickly stumbled to the main
stage they were performing at. Although their slot time was extremely early,
since the even went till 4:30am, they did not hold back. The deep dubstep sound
was pounding away at your ear drums and giving one the feeling of moving
through an ocean of sludge in a hoodie. In other words as some would say “it
was dirty as fuck”. The environment they
created was great and really showcased their ability to play a double dj set.
By this point I was given a half hit of lucy which
surprisingly affected me and thus made me less able to observe what was
happening. Giving them my props and thanking them for the set, I moved to the
outdoor patio to see one of my favorite lansing djs McRain.
Oddly
enough I was completely wrong about who I was seeing…it ended up being to early
and DJ AnaKin was playing haha. This Dj had great musical selection especially
his Gramatik tracks who is one of my favorites. DJ AnaKin was keeping the crowd
jumping on the patio stage and on inspection everyone (including myself) were
having the best time with his set.
After his set was nearing a close I asked to interview him
at a later time, to which he accepted, and was very kind about it. DJ Anakin kept
the energy flowing and served as a great transition to MCRain.
McRain has only been performing for a little over a year
but, if you were to listen you would not be able to tell. He has the ability to
transform any bar into an all out house, techno, etc. dance party jump fest.
The one thing that is a highlight about McRain is the fact he will keep you
dancing but will probably dance harder than you while still maintaining a flow
to his music mixing. When “higher” by Destructo was mixed into his set, best
believe I lost my fucking cool….. love that track. The energy of the crowd
during his set was excellent because we all know everyone can get down to some
dirty house and techno. After McRain finished getting us moving then lansing
local INOV8 took the stage.
INOV8 has played numerous festivals and has produced his own
music that maintains a heartbreaking move your feet sound. I was excited to
hear him drop his new-ish track “No Breaks” and of course he transitioned it
from his intro song. The unfortunate side of his set was that the levels were
already jacked up from McRain and ended up overloading twice during his set,
leaving gaps of silence and skipping. Although the sound was screwy he was still
able to maintain the vibe and kept everyone moving with his jive-y smooth
sounds. It is always a treat to hear him perform.
Now at this point after by accidently hitting on the gay
bartenders, I was being fed EXTREMELY strong drinks and the small bit of lucy
in my system put me in a state of confusion….. so I had to leave before the
main acts of Super Dre and Ana Sia could play. In all honesty though I didn’t
give a shit because I saw who I really wanted to see and from the photography
of Kendall Photography, it looks like everyone had a great time. Till next time
X Theory and Lansing till next time.
---OH and by the way (BTW for you cool cats) Interviews of
these Dj’s coming soon.
